Add another name to the roster of people who would like to succeed Paul Kaupas as Will County sheriff.
Will County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Egan conducted a press conference Thursday afternoon to announce his 2014 primary election bid. The conference was staged outside the Will County Courthouse in downtown Joliet.

Egan will join Will County Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Kelley on the Democratic ballot. The announced Republicans are Will County Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas and retired Deputy Chief Nick Ficarello

Egan's a 24-year veteran of the sheriff's office and prior to that spent 10 years as a Joliet police officer. He is a native and resident of Joliet, and has raised two grown daughters.

In a statement released about his campaign, it was noted that Egan "believes it’s time to change the Will County Sheriff’s Office from a bloated, top-heavy political organization to an efficient and effective sheriff’s department."

"By aggressively restructuring both the department and the budget, he will put more deputies on patrol while providing those deputies with the proper tools and resources to do their job," he pre-announcement statement said. "He will make the Sheriff’s department more accessible for residents with expanded community outreach and more convenient office hours."

Paul Kaupas has announced he will not seek a fourth four-year term.

Candidates will start circulating petitions to be on the March 18, 2014, primary ballot at the end of the year. The general election is Nov. 4, 2014.
