Woman Killed in Route 53 Car Crash in Romeoville

A 48-year-old Crest Hill woman died Friday from injuries suffered in a Thursday night car crash at Route 53 and Renwick Road.

A 48-year-old woman from Crest Hill died Thursday following a car crash near Route 53 and Renwick Road in south Romeoville.

The crash involved three cars and a semi-trailer on northbound Route 53, just south of Renwick Road, according to the Illinois State Police. It was reported around 4:50 p.m.

The victim was identified as Judy A. Shilka. She was pronounced dead at about 3:15 a.m. Friday at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.

The semi, a Ford Explorer and a Buick Century were stopped in traffic on Route 53, reports said. The semi was in the right lane. The other two cars were in the right turning lane.

For unknown reasons, Shilka, who was driving a Kia Sorento, failed to stop and struck the back of the semi-trailer, reports said. The Sorento then slid sideways, striking the Ford Explorer. The impact from the Kia Sorento pushed the Ford Explorer into the rear of the Buick Century.

Shilka was transported to Presence. Everyone else involved in the crash refused medical treatment.

This crash is under investigation by the Illinois State Police.

Did you inform the police of this? That is very useful info.
Randy May 11, 2013 at 01:37 AM
For the same reasons you shouldn't drive east or west on highways that run north and south, you should apply the brake before slamming into the back of a truck...

That comment seems heartless, No Whining. We don't know the circumstances surrounding the cause of her accident. Regardless, she is suddenly gone from the lives of her family and friends. Show some respect for others' grief.

@whining. Judy is a former neighbor and had family and friends who loved her. Your lack of empathy and callous disregard for her and those she left behind is disgusting!

How long until toxicology results are reported?
Randy May 11, 2013 at 02:51 PM
Williams observations plus some alcohol or drug findings could explain a lot.

Thankfully no one else was hurt. I am very interested in the toxicology report on this woman.

Ty Pam Judy has been my dearest friend for over 30 yrs. anyone who knew her knows she was not a drinker or drug user. I suspect mechanical issues. The rest of these ignorant attention seekers who want their 15 min of fame can shut the hell up and let people rest in peace

There was a recall on one make of kia"s due to the gas petal sticking. If this happened she had to be so afraid.rip

Gina, so sorry to hear of your loss. Did Judy perhaps have some chronic medical issues? Diabetes, blackouts.....etc.
william May 12, 2013 at 04:22 AM
This does not explain no brake lights. If my accelerator jammed I would hit the brakes or put it in neutral or shut off the engine. None of the above happened. I have many questions.
william May 12, 2013 at 04:37 AM
Gina, I am sorry for your and her families loss. Being a professional driver since 95 and driving 48 states and Canada I have seen many accidents. I keep seeing it in my head and have many questions. Was there an emergency at home? Did she have an argument with her boyfriend/husband? Did she have a medical issue? Was she texting at the time? For me it's not 15 minutes fame. It's something that has touched my life and if I can be of any assistance, I'm here! God grant you peace in your time of sorrow. Will

my husband has been a mechanic for 30 years and he has seen all kinds of weird car issues. These days everything is comtrollled by a computer,,,,,even gas pedals. Many cars have no cable connecting the gas pedal anymore. Computers fail all the time. when computers fail they can affect multiple systems also. RIP Judy and prayers for the family and friends. All you ignorant people neeed to learn some respect! Put yourself in their shoes!

@William and @No Whining: Tell me, if someone you knew in real life lost a loved one, would you start pointing out why it must have been their fault? Are you that cruel of a person? Does that make you feel good about yourself? Even if it were her fault, does that make it less sad or painful? I hope you would say these things in person because it would give me a great reason to separate your teeth from your stupid mouth. A woman died. It's tragic for those who knew and loved her regardless of the circumstances. Nobody gives a damn if you're a professional driver. Why don't you drive yourself to some other corner of the internet and enjoy somebody else's pain? Please feel free to go fuck yourself. - Ben Capraro

Ben, I was a witness I'm not putting blame only looking for answers. I would have traded places with you that day. I need closure! I guess you didn't read what I posted, if you read it correctly you would not be spewing anger at me. As for whining get a life! Just to let you know I have never been on patch before but I was hopeing to offer information and get answers, and thank's to you I will not be on again. God bless you!!!!!!!!

Randy May 15, 2013 at 02:50 AM
So what did the tox results show? I haven read a thing about a mechanical issue.
LJ Shilka May 18, 2013 at 01:33 PM
No whining ... The fact that you have so much interest in the findings of the accident are disturbing. Judy was a wonderful person and our family, her friends and animals no longer have her in our lives, only in our hearts. We may never have the real answers and it doesn't matter....it won't bring her back. She was too young and it's a tragic event that has changed lives of her loved ones. Your comments are inconsiderate, heartless and unwelcome, find some other news story to comment on! Perhaps you don't know what it feels like to lose someone.
william May 18, 2013 at 07:28 PM
LJ don't let these people that have no life get to you. I feel your loss, but you have to remember that Christ died for our sins and there is a life after death. We mourn for our loss, but one day we shall be reunited. I pray you find peace in this time of darkness. I pray that the Holy Spirit comes to you and gives you comfort.
