Suspect in Custody in Romeoville Shooting: Police

Turvey said the suspect, a 23-year-old male, is one of four persons of interest taken into custody following the shooting. He said the man was apprehended around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, about two-and-a-half hours after the double shooting in the 300 block of Emery Avenue.

"He was [found] in the area of the incident," Turvey said.

The 15-year-old girl was shot twice in the head and her mother was struck once in the neck when their attacker walked up to the passenger side of the vehicle and opened fire Thursday, police said.

Turvey said both victims remain at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. He said the teen is in critical condition, and he did not know the mother's condition.

Turvey said he could not comment on the suspect's relationship to the victims or the apparent motive for the crime. On Thursday, police said they do not believe the shooting was a random incident, and that both victims knew the shooter.

Chuck Pelkie, a spokesman for the Will County State's Attorney's Office, said charges have not yet been filed in the case.

Turvey said it's possible charges could come later today.

"It really depends on how the investigation goes," he said.

Several Romeoville schools were put on "soft lockdown" as a precaution after the shooting, which happened just blocks from Irene King Elementary School. The lockdown ended around 9:25 a.m. — the same time the reported suspect was apprehended.

Turvey said two other persons of interest in the case have been released and are not believed to have been involved in the shooting. A third man is also not believed to be involved, but was taken to the Will County jail on an in-state warrant, police said.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Romeoville Police Department and the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force.
