Sentencing Rescheduled in Jungkans Case

Tomasz Maciaszek is due back in court Dec. 20 in reckless homicide case.

A Romeoville man in the death of 17-year-old Christina Jungkans will be back in Will County court for sentencing next month.

A month after finding Tomasz Maciaszek guilty in a bench trial, Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak on Friday agreed to push back sentencing and post-trial movements to Dec. 20.

Jungkans, of Lockport, was killed May 9, 2008, when Maciaszek’s vehicle smashed into hers as she attempted to make a left turn onto 135th Street/Romeo Road from Hale Avenue.

According to police testimony during Maciaszek’s trial, the 24-year-old Romeoville resident was driving anywhere between 68 and 79 mph on Romeo Road, which has a 35-mph speed limit, when he hit Jungkans’ vehicle.

Jungkans, a junior, was pronounced dead at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.

Maciaszek was charged with reckless homicide in March 2009, nearly a year after the crash.

After rendering a guilty verdict in September, Bertani-Tomczak denied prosecutors' request to revoke Maciaszek’s bond, but ordered the Polish native to surrender his passport. His license has been suspended since his 2009 arrest.
