Semi Accident On Weber Road Causes Diesel Spill, Ties Up Traffic

No injuries, but Weber Road was closed for several hours near Taylor Road after two semi-trailers jackknifed in an early morning accident.

The blizzard might be over, but early morning travel wasn’t any easier for some commuters Friday.

A section of Weber Road near Taylor Road was closed in both directions for several hours after two semi-trailers jackknifed, resulting in a diesel spill that dumped about 90 gallons of fuel into the roadway.

Romeoville Assistant Police Chief Steven Lucchesi said at about 2:45 a.m., a semi heading north on Weber was struck by a southbound truck that was attempting to make a left turn onto Taylor Road.

"The driver of the truck that was turning said he just didn't see the other truck," Lucchesi said. The driver received a ticket for failure to yield at an intersection, he added.

firefighters responded to the crash, according to Fire Prevention Director Rich Berndt.

Berndt said early reports that one of the semis was on fire were incorrect.

“(There was) no fire, no entrapment,” he said. Both semi drivers were unharmed, Berndt added, saying no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

A diesel tank on one of the trailers ruptured, spilling most of its oil into the road.

“There was 100 gallons in the tank (to start with), and we found approximately 10 gallons remaining in the tank,” Berndt said.

A trucking company sent a cleanup crew out to handle the spill, according to Lucchesi.

“Nothing got into the drains or anything,” Berndt said.

Oil spills are nothing new to Romeoville. Last September, a ruptured pipeline owned by Enbridge Energy Partners dumped more than 457,000 gallons beneath Parkwood Avenue and Route 53. In December, a in Lockport closed a section of 135th Street in Romeoville near the Citgo Lemont Refinery.

Lucchesi said the road reopened at 6:45 a.m.
