Romeoville Police, RHS to Conduct Traffic Safety Week

Effort aimed at increasing safety among teen drivers.

The Romeoville Police Department will team with Romeoville High School to conduct Driver Safety Week from April 29 to May 3, with the goal of increasing safety among teen drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drivers ages 15-20 are especially vulnerable to death and injury on U.S. roadways, and traffic crashes are the leading cause of death among American teenagers. Teens are involved in three times as many fatal crashes than older drivers, according to the NHTSA.

Next week, police will focus on three issues related to teen crashes: Speed, seat belt use and driving under the influence of alcohol. The following activities are planned:

  • April 29: Police will issue informational brochures on vehicles in the RHS parking lot, with reference to teenagers who have been killed in speed-related accidents.
  • April 30: Officers will be stationed at the exits at RHS as school is dismissed and will observe students as they leave the parking lot. If the driver is wearing a seat belt, he or she will be given a sweet reward — a candy bar — for driving safely. If the driver is not buckled up, he or she will get a written warning.
  • April 30: Police will recruit students to represent traffic statistics. The teens will be given T-shirts before school begins. As announcements are read over the intercom regarding each statistic, each student will put on the T-shirt indicating they are now a "statistic," police said.
  • May 1: Police will conduct seat belt inspections in the area of RHS and will issue administrative warning tickets to teens not wearing seat belts.
  • May 2: Romeoville police wil present a safe driving a legal update to driver's education classes at RHS.
