Romeoville Man Sentenced in Stabbing Death of Joliet Teen

Fabian Almodovar pleaded guilty to stabbing 17-year-old Carlos Orozco in the Jewel-Osco parking lot on Weber Road.

A Romeoville man who pleaded guilty to the stabbing death of a teenager was sentenced to 11 years in prison this week.

Fabian Almodovar, 23, stabbed 17-year-old Carlos Orozco to death in the parking lot of the Romeoville Jewel-Osco in May 2013.

Police said Almodovar stabbed the teenager in the chest during a fight in the parking lot of the grocery store. According to the Herald-News, Almodovar had sold marijuana to Orozco's friends earlier in the day before asking for a ride to the Weber Road store. On the way, the two, who had not met before, reportedly began "arguing who was tougher."

Romeoville police said Almodovar and Orozco fought in the Jewel-Osco parking lot, where Almodovar suffered facial injuries and a concussion.

Police said Almodovar stabbed Orozco, then fled into the Jewel-Osco store, where he was found in a bathroom. He was taken first to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center for his injuries before being transported to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, police said at the time.

Orozco was found unconscious in the parking lot with a stab wound to the chest, police said. He was pronounced dead at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.

Almodovar in April pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, according to court records.
