Police Plan DUI Crackdown Over Labor Day Weekend

Stay safe; don't drink and drive.

It’s the unofficial end of summer — or eat least summer barbecue season. But as area residents celebrate Labor Day weekend, they should heed this advice: Don’t drink and drive.

Romeoville Police will be increasing enforcement through Monday, Sept. 5. Several officers from the department’s traffic unit will be assigned solely to patrolling for drunken drivers, according to Assistant Chief Steven Lucchesi.

“It’s a weekend that’s extensively traveled by motorists, so we want to make sure we have a couple officers that are tasked with just looking for DUIs,” Lucchesi said.

Romeoville isn’t the only law enforcement agency that will be cracking down this weekend.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office on Monday announced its plans for its Labor Day 2011 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” DUI crackdown.

Citing data from the Illinois Department of Transportation showing that the midnight to 3 a.m. time frame is the deadliest time to be on Illinois roads, Dep. Chief Ken Kaupas said the department will increase DUI enforcement over the weekend.

“The numbers do not lie,” Kaupas said. “We will be stepping up our late-night enforcement efforts, making sure impaired drivers are off the road and motorists are buckled up."

The sheriff’s office urges residents to designate a sober driver during Labor Day weekend celebrations.
