Police Investigating Report of Gunshots

Cops canvass neighborhood after reported gunshots, but come up empty handed.

are investigating reports that numerous shots were fired on Abbeywood Drive late Sunday night. But so far, investigators haven’t found any evidence of a shooting, according to Assistant Chief Steven Lucchesi.

Police received a call from a resident around 11:36 p.m. Sunday, Lucchesi said. The caller reported hearing several loud bangs that sounded like gunfire coming from the 0-100 block of Abbeywood.

According to police, officers canvassed homes on nearby Rockledge Drive, where residents reported seeing a newer model white Lincoln drive past with its lights off. Residents said they heard two loud bangs moments later, followed by three more loud bangs coming from the direction of Dalhart Avenue, Lucchesi said.

Abbeywood Drive resident Jeff Collins said detectives knocked on his door on Monday afternoon, asking if he had heard or seen anything.

“I did not hear it,” said Collins, who lives about four doors down from the site of the alleged shooting, but he said the report was unsettling nonetheless. “I told the police officers, that’s why we need more patrols in the area."

So far, the investigation hasn’t yielded any evidence of gunshots, and no one witnessed anyone fire a gun from the white Lincoln, police said.

“We didn’t locate any property damage or any casings,” Lucchesi said. “At this point in time, we’re coming up empty.”

Occasionally, witnesses can mistake the sound of a car backfiring or fireworks for gunfire, he noted.

“If we cannot locate anything, we do document that,” Lucchesi said.

Detectives have been combing through their files in search of a vehicle that matches the description of the Lincoln given by witnesses, police said.

Anyone who has information on the reported shooting is urged to contact Romeoville Police at 815-886-7219. Callers should ask to speak with an investigator or supervisor, Lucchesi said.
