Interstate 55 has reopened following an accident at U.S. 30 Monday morning that had southbound traffic detoured at Route 126.

Update/posted at 3:30 p.m. Monday:

The driver of a garbage truck that overturned on Interstate 55 Monday morning, closing the southbound lanes and one northbound lane for several hours, lost control avoiding another vehicle, Sgt. Jim Powell of Illinois State Police District 5 said.

According to initial reports, the driver was reaching down to do something in his truck when he came up too quickly on a driver who was going slower than expected in the right-hand lane, Powell said. He took "evasive action" but ended up losing control of the vehicle, he said.

No information was available on whether the driver was injured or ticketed, he said.
