Man Avenges Beating by Driving into Attacker with SUV, Police Say

Maurice Hamilton was arrested by Joliet police after he plowed into a man who had earlier attacked his friend, Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

A Romeoville man was seeking vengeance Saturday when he used his SUV to mow down a man who allegedly beat his friend at a Joliet party, Joliet police said.

Maurice L. Hamilton, 23, 1211 Grand, was charged with aggravated battery and reckless conduct in connection with the earl morning attack in which he used his Jeep Grand Cherokee to drive into a 23-year-old Joliet man outside a home at 462 N. Eastern Ave., Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Police were called to the scene at about 4:35 a.m. and found a smashed fence, tire tracks on the lawn and the victim lying on the ground, Roechner said.

Witnesses identified Hamilton as the driver of the SUV that drove into the victim and told officers the attack was in retaliation for the victim and another man beating Hamilton's friend at the party, he said.

Police stopped Hamilton and his friend a few blocks away from the scene. The friend, however, refused to cooperate with officers and did not want to press charges against the men who beat him so Hamilton was the only person arrested, Roechner said.

Hamilton is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.
