Student's Arrest Tied to Friend's Overdose Death at Lewis: Cops

Romeoville police say Lewis University student Jamie Olson took steps to conceal her involvement in the suspected heroin death of her friend.

A 20-year-old Frankfort woman died of a drug overdose while at a Lewis University dorm this weekend, and the friend with whom she was staying has been arrested for trying to conceal her role in the death, Romeoville police said Monday.

Anna Marinier was found dead at Fitzpatrick Hall at about 11:10 a.m. Sunday, Romeoville Assistant Police Chief Steve Lucchesi said. Although toxicology tests are still pending, it's suspected she overdosed on heroin, he said.

Her friend, Jamie Olson, 21, of 9125 Letterkenny, Tinley Park, was arrested Sunday night on a felony charge of obstruction of justice and booked into the Will County jail.

Citing the "ongoing investigation," Lucchesi declined to disclose what Olson did in terms of obstructing the case other than "she tried to conceal her involvement in this incident."

The two women had been together for most of Saturday night and Sunday morning, but Lucchesi would not say if they were in the dorm for that entire time or if they had gone out and returned. "Some admissions have been made" about the fact that heroin had been involved, but Lucchesi said he could not release any other details.

It's possible that more charges may be forthcoming, he said.

According to jail records, Olson has been arrested at least twice previously. In November 2011, she was charged with misdemeanor identity theft and felony forgery and in April 2012 she was arrested on three counts of felony identification theft stemming from an incident that occurred in September 2011.

Lewis University, based in Romeoville, announced the death on Sunday via its Facebook page but did not reveal the victim's name.

"The Lewis University community expresses its prayerful sympathy to all who are touched by this tragedy, especially family and friends," the Facebook statement said.

Olson was charged with identity theft and forgery last year in New Lenox. Police said she stole four checks from a New Lenox resident and cashed them for $120 total.

It was a well known accident..on Briggs street in 1995...John Frantachini and his cousin he had not seen in ten years...Was an accident with a crotch rocket boarded out, parents had the bike chained up...he cut the chain, hot wored the bike and went to a party with his cousin, when they left the police chase pursued....now act of self responsibility comes in....This kid ran from the police at 110mph...his parents did everything they could...he ended up killing him,his cousin..and my mother now..let me explain...we could of sued the people he partied with, his parents, and the police for the chase...but I looked at his parents in that court room and seen they were hurting just like my family....going against my families wishes..I did not sue...then it would of been just about money like it was his parents fault..and it was not..it was his own decision that killed 3 people, not the makers of the bike, his parents, nor the police..bikes are made for riding, police are here to protect, and his parents took the bike from him....bottom line it was John's fault no one else's....I don't just preach self responsibility I live it....I believe if your not forced, tied down, against your will..then it was your own free will to act..

This worries me. I live on same street as this Olsen girl and they just moved into their home within the last year. Our subdivision is loaded with young impressionable children and having this influence at end of our block causes lots of concern especially seeing her track record with other arrests.

myself and another friend where told it was crushed up pills at a party from who we didnt know was an addict at the time gave us we were young and stupid and he gave it to us a few times for free then we started getting withdrawls afterwards and one thing led to another but anna and jaimie knew what it was when they did it the first time and basically begged my friend who refused to give it to them at first because he didnt want the same thing to happen to them and become addicted then one day he had no cash and was dope sick and anna and jaimie offered to buy him some if they can try it and then they eventually saw where they can get it and went and found the drug dealers themeselves and they basically became dope buddies and would go and do it togather. as to what i did differently i finally realized that i was an addict and i cant keep doing it to avoid the withdrawls because if i kept doing it i would be in jail or worse die ( this realization happend when i was actually waiting for my drug dealer at a gas station and the police pulled up and searched me and my friend we didnt have anything on us at the time but he was withdrawing and they knew what we were doing and they had a heart to heart talk with us and told us it was not worth it i was only 19 at the time and thank god i was only snorting) we got into contact with the officer and he actually went out of his way to help us and got us into a rehab and N.A program and it was not easy getting clean and its hard staying

i stopped talking to them and i dont know where they got it from they had there own people that they went to that they found on their own and if u knew an addicts mentality they never give someone there dealers number because if you want to go to thier dealer they want to be the middle man and make you buy them some for taking you to get the drug they call it dope law if i knew i promise i would have came forward already

To all of the posters on here...yes, something needs to be done, and according to Captain John Roberts, former Chicago Cop and father who lost his own son to overdose (I assume no relation to John Roberts above) "We can't arrest our way out of the situation" He is right. The Good Samaritan Law.."Don't Run, Dial 911" was put in place for just this situation. The girl might face charges because she failed to dial 911. What happed to "Cleaned Up" also happened to my son...was told the the white powder was another, less harmful (in his mind) drug. He would have never started on heroin knowingly. Most kids are tricked into it initially. Like Juan's mom above, I lost my own son 4 months ago after a 6 month struggle to stay clean. But we are doing something about it. There are groups forming all over the Chicago area, and we are getting ready to launch an awareness/prevention campaign state-wide. Anyone interested can join our facebook page at Open Hearts Open Eyes. We are 5,000 strong and along with other groups in the Chicago and suburban area, we are a combined effort of 10,000 people committed to stopping this heroin epidemic. Everyone here can talk and talk, but action is what is needed to change the course of events. My heart goes out to all who have lost to this deadly disease. We have a mom's support group, connections to several grief groups in the area, support for current addicts, adn alternative supports. Check us out!

Injecting yourself with heroin is a choice that you and ONLY you can make. I am not saying that this was not tragic. Jamie Olson did not force a needle into Anna's arm, and as I know this specific incident, heroin was not the only thing that she was taking, nor was it the first time she made the bad choice to do it. Nobody can justify putting the blame on Jamie. Yes, she has a heroin addiction, but that in no way had anything to do with the death of her friend. People need to open their eyes and place blame where blame is due. Anna had a bad problem with drugs. She chose to get high, and the result was tragic. I truly feel for her family, and will keep them in my prayers, but the fact is, everyone needs to own up to their own problems, the fact that Anna had a severe drug problem that had absolutely nothing to do with Jamie Olson, and stop trying to pawn the blame on someone else. If her problem with heroin was that bad, it would have eventually come to this... and that poor girl Jamie just happened to be the one she was doing it with that night. PEOPLE MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES. RIP Anna... I wish you would have gotten the help that you needed long before it came to this. I will also keep Jamie in my prayers. Not only did this poor kid lose a friend, but is now taking the blame for the bad choice that friend made. I'm sorry if my opinion seems harsh, but now that poor girl is sitting in jail for something she had NO CONTROL OVER, and another young life is wasted.

People make mistakes!! Give this poor girl a break! She did not force anyone to do anything they didn't want to... your judgment that you place on this poor child is ignorant and completely misguided. I am so tired of parents and friends acting like the other woman was a victim in this. As I said, it is VERY sad, VERY tragic... but also VERY much her own fault, and nobody else's. Stop trying to pawn it off on the other woman involved, just because you all feel you need someone to blame, when the blame is nobodies but the young woman who CHOSE to inject heroin. Again, all involved will be in my prayers.

John, I couldn't agree more. If you are at a bar, you leave and drive home drunk, get in a car accident on the way home and tragically kill another driver on the road... does the bartender who gave you the beer take the blame for what happened? The entire bar? They all knew, so are they at fault? NO. Jamie is a sweet kid. Yes, she had a problem with heroin, but that in no way makes her responsible for that girl choosing to inject herself that night. At some point a line needs to be drawn. If people think her going to jail is justified, then wouldn't it be true of the dealer they got the drugs from to be sitting there too, and then the dealer that gave that dealer the drugs... and so on?

"Anna made the choice to stick the needle in her arm." THANK YOU! That statement to me says everything that needs to be said about this specific case.
OwnWhatYouDo December 14, 2012 at 01:02 pm
Jamie Olson did NOT supply the heroin. Anna drove them in HER car, bought the drugs with HER money. Know your facts before you condemn this poor kid. Yes, Anna bought the drugs for Jamie, but then turned around and asked to partake. I don't think you know much about a heroin addict, because if you did, you would know that the last thing they want to do is to share the drugs that they do have. And so she has a past... so what!! I can assure you that you are NOT perfect, and who are you to judge anyone?? And yes, before you point at me, I DO have children. If my child made the choices that Anna did, I could blame nobody but her and possibly myself as a parent, for not getting her the help that she desperately needed. Heroin was not the only drug that child was on, nor was it the first time she used. Let God judge, because it is not your place to trash and condemn that poor girl.
OwnWhatYouDo December 16, 2012 at 12:02 am
Who are ANY of you to judge?? "People don't make excuses for Olson. She deserves to get arrested." Who the Hell are you?! I must apologize... I wasn't aware that we were in the presence of God. I pray you don't have children. I pray even more so that if you do, that they are never put in a situation like this... a situation that they have no control over, that they are not in fault for... yet people condemn them the way you are blindly condemning this poor child. As much as I do pray that our Lord does not take out on you the fact that you are acting as judge and jury in his place, God reserves special punishment for people like you, I just pray he doesn't judge you as harshly as you have Jamie Olson.
OwnWhatYouDo December 16, 2012 at 12:03 am
So by your logic, Anna deserved to die? SHE made the choice to shoot heroin into her veins. She BOUGHT it, therefore she is the one that provided it. So if it was Jamie that passed away, according to your OPINION, as your logic is far from fact, then Anna would deserve to go to jail? Why does Jamie deserve to get charged because of something Anna, a drug addict did? I just can't wrap my brain around the ignorance that I am reading here. When I was younger-over ten years ago-I was at a party. While there, a young girl overdosed. Someone had called 911, and then everyone bailed. I was the only person that sat with that poor girl as she passed away. I was also on drugs at the time, and even though I knew I could get in a lot of trouble, I could not let this young girl, scared and alone, pass away with nobody by her side. And no, I didn't know her from a hole in the ground. The possibility of myself being held responsible for her death never even crossed my mind. And guess what, I was NOT held responsible in any way. In fact, this girls parents were so grateful that I had enough of a heart to sit with their baby so that she was not scared and alone. No blame was put on me. The only thing the police did was have me make a statement containing anything I could remember that could help them. They praised me for what I did. Jamie DID call 911. Yes, she hid the stuff. She is just a kid, and she was scared. She called 911, did CPR. She sat with her, afraid for her friend.

Jamie Olson is not scum. Real classy. How old are you again? Obviously a juvenile. Otherwise you would not speak so disrespectfully about a child, whether she was wrong or not. Grow up.. I thought name calling ended with grade school. Come back when you are ready to have a respectable discussion with the adults sweetie.
NoMoreDrugs December 17, 2012 at 08:13 pm
Own, sorry Jamie was and is a huge problem. If you are familiar with the situation, then you know Jamie was selling this to anyone who would by it. Sorry, dealers are just as responsible as Anna. The only difference is Anna will never get a chance to turn her life around,
OwnWhatYouDo December 18, 2012 at 12:22 am
Ok, this is for the comment by "NoMoreDrugs". In THIS situation, Anna was the one who bought the heroin, with her own money. Drove herself and Jamie to go and get it, as Jamie did not have a car. So buy your logic, the dealer she got the drugs from, which SHE provided Jamie with, is the one who should be behind bars, not Jamie Olson. Yes, it's sad that Anna will never have a chance now to better her life, which even according to her own father she was spiraling and had no interest in doing so... her death just happened sooner rather than later. And now this poor girl is sitting in jail because of a bad decision ANNA made, not something she was forced to do, and Jamie is paying for it. How is she supposed to better her life, when she has to spend it in a jail cell for something she didn't even do.
OwnWhatYouDo December 18, 2012 at 12:28 am
She didn't supply the heroin. Anna bought it with her own money. They are called facts, please know them before you continue to trash this poor child. Anna bought it, Anna drove to pick it up, and Anna did it. Sadly, she paid the ultimate price... but that is not Jamie's fault either. Jamie is also the one who called 911, meaning she would never be charged with drug induced homicide anyway. When drugs and OD are involved, the person that calls 911 gets immunity against any of those charges. So the only thing she will be charged with is obstruction of justice.. and that is only because she is just a kid, and she was scared shitless. Give her a damn break, they were both in the wrong.. they are not the first, nor will the be the last kids that have to go through this heartbreak.
NoMoreDrugs December 18, 2012 at 12:28 pm
Own, your comments seem to change with the wind. Didn't you say if Anna didn't have money she would of dropped Jamie to get her own fix? Now your saying Anna SHARED her drugs. Funny. My kid's know Jamie and know what type of a scum she is. I'm sure the person she stole her identity is grateful she did. You are only seeing the charges she has had since she turned 18. What about all the other trouble she has caused prior? Her main goal was to get more customers, everyone who knows her knows that to be true!
NoMoreDrugs December 18, 2012 at 12:30 pm
Own, "poor girl"? Give me a break! They need to throw away the key's on that p* o* s*. Sorry, I know Anna's father, and I don't believe you have a clue as to what was going on! Keep feeling sorry for Jamie. You never know, you may get to experience her goodness to one of your family members.

If we listen to Own, everyone needs to feel sorry for her. She is a good girl. Here is a list of charges just in the last year:
4 counts of identity theft (2 different dates) and 1 count of forgery. http://66.158.72.230/nwspublic/Corrections/InmateSummary.aspx?ID=-82535 What a good girl she is!

i knew both jamie and anna. and i have to say that jamie is not a bad person. the drugs turned her into one. she panicked and did what she thought was best in the state of mind she was in. which obviously wasnt a very good one. and its sad that it had to end this way. but when in addiction u dont think it will happen to u or u dont care if it does. i know jamie wasnt a good friend to be around when she was using but really who is. heroin attaches to u it becomes ur new love. i know from experiance. thankfully ive been clean off it 7 months now but yea i still struggle with the thought in my head. it will always be there. some people just arent ready to give up that lifestyle...
