Updated at 9:15 a.m. May 23.

A Woodridge man died after a vehicle became submerged in a pond Thursday night in Romeoville.

Kojo Pewudie, 54, was pronounced dead at the Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital emergency room at 9:21 p.m., the Will County Coroner's office said.

Police said a 25-year-old Romeoville woman was driving the 2001 Mazda when it left the roadway near 1400 Bluff Road around 8 p.m. and came to rest in a retention pond.

The woman was able to exit the water, Romeoville police said. Pewudie was found in the pond by Romeoville Fire Department personnel.

Both were taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, where Pewudie was pronounced dead, police said.

In addition to Romeoville, crews from other departments, including the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District Dive Rescue Team and the Naperville fire department, were on the scene of the incident.

The crash is still under investigation by Romeoville police.
