A 22-year-old Bolingbrook man faces an aggravated DUI charge following a fatal crash that occurred over the weekend in Wheaton, police said Tuesday.

Luis Jimenez, 22, of 508 Racine Lane in Bolingbrook, appeared Tuesday morning in bond court where a $500,000 bail was set in the case. If convicted, he could face up to 14 years in prison on a charge of aggravated DUI involving death, which is a class 2 felony.

The charge stems from a Saturday accident that occurred about 2 a.m. on Sheffield Street in Wheaton, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's Office press release.

Prosecutors said Jimenez left a friend's house in Wheaton "to go for a joy ride" and was traveling at "a high rate of speed" around a curve on Sheffield when he lost control and crashed into a tree.

The front passenger, whose name was not being released by officials Tuesday afternoon, died on the scene, and a rear seat passenger, who is also not being named, was severely injured, according to the news release.

Police said the joy ridge took place after a night of drinking. An initial investigation into the crash revealed Jimenez had a blood alcohol content of 0.09, which is slightly above the legal limit of .08, according to the news release.

Jimenez and the surviving passenger were taken to a local hospital following the crash. Jimenez was released from the hospital Monday afternoon and immediately taken into custody.

Jimenez is next expected in court on June 2.
