Attempted Murder Charges Filed in Romeoville Shooting

Erick Maya, 23, of Cicero, is being held in the shooting of a mother and daughter Thursday morning in Romeoville.

A 23-year-old Cicero man has been charged in the shooting of a 15-year-old Romeoville girl and her mother.

Erick M. Maya, of 5600 Park Avenue, is charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, Will County State's Attorney Jim Glasgow announced Friday.

A warrant for Maya's arrest was signed late Friday afternoon. Judge Corey Lund set his bond at $5 million.

Romeoville police said they took Maya into custody around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, just hours after the teen and her mother were shot as they sat in a car in their driveway in the 300 block of Emery Avenue.

On Friday, Romeoville Police Chief Mark Turvey said he could not comment on the suspect's relationship to the victims or the apparent motive for the crime.

On Thursday, police said they did not believe the shooting was random, and that the victims knew their attacker.

Police allege that Maya shot the teen twice in the head before turning the gun on her mother, who was shot in the neck. Both victims remain at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Maya is due to appear in Will County court via video on Saturday morning, according to Glasgow's office.
