Rashaad Byrd is taken into custody after police sort out how a 7-year-old boy brought a loaded weapon to his school on Thursday, according to a newspaper report.

A Romeville man has been charged in connection with a 7-year-old boy bringing a loaded handgun to his school on Thursday morning, according to a report on DailyHerald.com.

Rashaad Byrd, 27, of the 200 block of Highpoint, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and child endangerment, according to the report. Elgin police said Byrd was staying in an Elgin apartment with the boy and his family and had been in possession of the gun.

The boy found the gun—a 9 mm handgun—and brought it to Gifford Elementary School in Elgin on Thursday morning. The gun was found in the second-grader's backpack and police were notified, according to the DailyHerald.com.

No one was injured. There was no evidence the boy intended to harm anyone, according to a school district spokeman. And no charges will be filed against the boy, according to Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda.
