Joy-Sharers

What does joy mean in this holiday season? How do we share the joy?

Two small groups in our church are reading the book, "The Uncluttered Heart," by Beth A. Richardson. It is a wonderful book that reminds us to think about various topics during Advent — hope, peace, and joy. This week's focus has been joy; very fitting since we are celebrating "joy" in this, our third week of Advent.

Last Sunday in worship, we talked about how important joy is in our lives and how, once we have joy in our hearts, it becomes easier to share this joy with others. For those of us who are believers, we know that our true joy comes through Jesus Christ.

At this time of year, it should be easy to focus on this joy, especially as we prepare our homes for Christmas.

But, sadly, for many people, finding joy at this time of year is a bit elusive.  For some, it's because of loss in their lives — a loved one, a friend, etc. For others, it's because of loss of another kind — emotional loss; feelings of estrangement from family or general familial dysfunction. For others still, there is a loss that they might not even be aware of — a spiritual loss.

Some people have filled their lives and homes up so much with the things of this world that they have completely lost the meaning of Christmas.

Tonight, my husband, the kids and I had the opportunity to watch a show we really enjoy, Glee. On this episode, they had a young man who read a part of the Christmas story from the Bible. It was unexpected and very appropriate. I hoped that those watching might become intrigued, wanting to know more.

This is where you and I come in, especially if we are believers. You and I are called to be different, not just at this time of year, but throughout the year. We are called to put the things of God in the forefront of our hearts, minds, and actions.  We are called to be the light that shines into the darkness of people's loss — physical, emotional, or spiritual. We are the ones to whom God has delivered the "Good news of great joy!" The Savior has come ... and He will come again! Our jobs now, are to be like the shepherds...we are to share the joy that we have experienced.

So, my question to you this week, what will you do this week to be a joy-sharer?
