Five Ways to Celebrate Earth Day 2012

Protecting the planet may be a global effort, but there's plenty you can do right here at home.

Sunday, April 22 will mark the 42nd annual Earth Day.

The first Earth Day came in 1970 when a devastating oil spill prompted Wisconsin Sen. Gaylord Nelson to come up with a way to unite people in a campaign to protect the planet.

Today, the need to go green remains just as crucial. Here are some ways you can help Mother Earth — or just enjoy nature — this Earth Day.

Go green right in your own backyard (or front yard, if you prefer) by taking advantage of the ’s Spring Tree Sale.

Deadline to order your tree is May 3. For a complete list of available trees and an order form, click here.

Conserve water by recycling rain.

The Village of Romeoville’s Green Team is also offering 55-gallon rain barrels  for $85 each.

Bird walk

The Will County Forest Preserve District will host a free, all-ages migratory bird walk from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Lake Renwick Heron Rookery in Plainfield.

The lake is a well-known nesting location for herons, egrets and more, and you’re sure to spot some interesting waterfowl.

Guests should bring binoculars and favorite bird guide and dress for the weather.

To register, call 708-946-2216.

Shop green

Visit your local store on Earth Day and stop by guest services to get a free reusable shopping bag to use on your next shopping trip!

Target will be giving away one bag per guest.

Ellis House & Equestrian Center in Minooka is hosting plenty of free events to celebrate Earth Day from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Activities include a University of Illinois Extension scavenger hunt, bird walks, nature hay rides, compost education, pony rides and more. Guests can also recycle injket cartridges and cell phones during the event.
