College Football: NIU Attack Bolstered by 'The Stinger' from Romeoville

Romeoville High School grad Cameron Stingily brings a bruising inside running presence to Northern Illinois University's powerful football offense.

In Mid-American Conference football circles, a warning has been issued.

Defenses rigged to stop Northern Illinois Heisman Trophy hopeful Jordan Lynch risk the danger of getting attacked by The Stinger.

That’s Patch’s new nickname for NIU’s Cameron Stingily, a redshirt junior and local boy done good.

Stingily is a 6-foot-1, 244-pound converted linebacker from Romeoville who is wreaking havoc for the Huskies (4-0) running primarily between the tackles. He rushed for 72 yards on 15 carries in NIU’s 55-24 victory over Purdue in West Lafayette, one that catapulted the Huskies to No. 23 in this week’s USA Today Coaches Poll and already has some folks talking about NIU crashing the BCS party once again.

Stingily—making like a bull in a china shop—has powered his way straight ahead for 310 yards rushing and ranks as NIU’s second-leading ground-gainer (behind Lynch) heading into the Huskies’ MAC opener Saturday at Kent State. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. (TWC Sportschannel).

Beware.
