After doctors said it was unlikely he would live longer than a few days, a Romeoville toddler is beating the odds.

Two-year-old Manny Bueno — known to his family, friends and fans as "Supermanny" — has fought back against a condition known as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Now also diagnosed with cerebral palsy, the tot has undergone hyberbaric oxygen therapy, as well as acupuncture, and has made progress. But the treatments aren't covered by insurance.

Now, a 5K fundraiser is in the works to help Manny's family with the expenses related to his ongoing medical care.

Mom Holly is hoping to get at least 700 people to sign up for the Sunday, May 4 "Supermanny Shuffle 5K."

The event will feature a 5K race at 9 a.m. and a Super Kids Miler at 8 a.m., starting at the Romeoville Recreation Center, 900 W. Romeo Road.

Race registration is $40 in advance and $45 the day of the event for the 4K; the Super Kids Miler costs $17 in advance and $20 the day of the race.
