You Can Thank La Nina for the Moody Weather

National Weather Service predicts cooler temperatures, precipitation will continue.

Enjoy Tuesday's warmer weather, Romeoville, because the good days may be few and far between for some time, according to the National Weather Service. The dreary days are going to continue.

Richard Castro, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville said that our weather is the direct result of a La Niña weather system and even though the system is weakening it will continue to be the cause for ongoing precipitation and cool temperatures.

“[The La Niña] was moderate to strong during the fall and winter months and still has an influence during the spring. It will continue to have an influence on the weather patterns,” Castro said.

With La Niña influencing our weather we are experiencing cooler temperatures, above normal precipitation and increased cloud cover, he said. The three-month outlook for May, June and July is for more of the same.

So far in April the National Weather Service’s Romeoville location has received almost 4.8 inches of precipitation, Castro said. O’Hare received about 3.85 inches, just above normal.

“It’s been raining so frequently—we’ve seen at least a trace of rainfall this month except for six days,” Castro said.

Tuesday and Friday look like they will be warmer days with temperatures in the 60s or 70s, he said. But temperatures will drop to the 50s.

The Weather Service is predicting rain early Tuesday, then returning later Tuesday night through Thursday, with some sun predicted Friday. Another storm system is expected to move into the area over the weekend.

Ways to make the best of the bad weather:

  • Movie marathon with the family. Pick a series you haven't seen in a while and make it a fun event with popcorn and candy.
  • Read a book. Turn off the tube and find an old favorite or a new pick  and use the indoor time to your advantage.
  • Organize closets, cabinets and dresser drawers. Nobody wants to do those tasks on lovely, beautiful days.
  • Plan a fun event you will do once the sun shines. Be prepared and make a plan so you don't miss out on the good days when they arrive.
  • Margaritas and manicures. Enjoy time with your friends with a fun get-together and enjoy a few beverages and prep those nails for the days when they may see the sun.
  • Garage timeout. For the men who love having time to be left alone to mess around in the man cave, get out to the garage or basement and organize your toolshop, work on a project or plan the purchase of that new, cool gadget.
