Schools, Village Closed in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

A guide to what's happening — and not happening — on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Monday, Americans will pause to remember Civil Rights pioneer Martin Luther King Jr. Many area organizations are closed for the federal holiday, which coincides with King’s birthday. Here’s what you should know about area closings and activities:

  1. The kids will be home on Monday. All campuses in the  and Plainfield Community Consolidated School District are closed for the holiday, along with and .  and Romeoville campus students will also get a break from classes.
  2. Government offices, including the  and Will County offices, are closed on Monday.
  3. Worried about having nothing to do? Don’t fret. The  has activities for kids. Kids ages 6-9 can join “Monday Madness” from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Crest Hill branch, 1298 Theodore St. In celebration of the library's "Chill Out and Read" winter reading program, kids will learn all about polar bears, narwhal and other creatures that live in the Arctic, plus enjoy stories, crafts and games. Parents can register their children for the event by calling the Children’s Services Desk at 815-725-0234 or emailing efitzgerald@whiteoaklibrary.org. Adults and teens can also partake in the , which runs through Feb. 4. At 6 p.m., State Rep.   4. Romeoville-area residents can enjoy a meal out while helping a local athletic team. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., for customers who mention 's Speed Team. Proceeds will benefit the team.
