UPDATED: Pipeline Repairs Could Take Up to a Week

Excavation near Weber and 135th Street could cause traffic delays this week as repairs continue on an underground butane pipeline.

Updated at 3 p.m.

A was under control by early Sunday and most local roads had reopened following a Saturday afternoon HazMat response by Romeoville police and firefighters near Weber Road and 135th Street. The leak prompted the closure of Weber from Lakewood Falls Drive to Normantown Road, and both the Dominick’s and BP gas stations were asked to close as a precaution as firefighters worked to flush the highly explosive gas out of nearby storm sewers.

According to a press release issued Sunday by the village, the underground pipeline leak was discovered after emergency officials responded to a 9-1-1 call around 3:30 p.m. May 14.

By Sunday, Weber Road had reopened, as had the gas stations, but a section of 135th Street near Dominick’s is likely to remain closed temporarily as crews worked to replace the pipe.

Megan Washbourne, spokeswoman for pipeline owner ONEOK Partners, said the company is still investigating the cause of the leak.

Repairs were slated to start Monday afternoon and could take up to a week, Washbourne said.

As repairs continue, excavation along Weber Road may cause traffic delays, according to the village.

Police Chief Mark Turvey said while the gas is explosive, it dissipates as it is released into the air.

“It should not create any environmental problems,” he said.
