Library Receives Technology Grant

Funding will help "Eliminate the Digital Divide."

Thanks to a grant totaling more than $15,000 from Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, the will be able to bring technology up to date at its Crest Hill branch.

The $15,390 grant is part of a nearly $1 million “Eliminate the Digital Divide” program grant awarded to the Illinois State Library by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Des Plaines Valley Public Library District is one of 41 public libraries and community college resource centers to share in the grant.

The funding will help enhance broadband computer access at the branch, 1298 Theodore St., by providing new adult computer equipment and a new printer. The updated equipment will be used to enhance computer courses for adults, job seminars for the unemployed and programs for children, seniors, minorities and individuals with disabilities, according to Library Director Scott Pointon.

“What’s nice is that to [qualify for a share of the grant], we had to agree to do things we’re already doing.” he said.

“The digital divide prevents many low-income citizens from having access to important technology and educational programs that can greatly enrich their lives,” said White.  “Having access to information allows citizens to engage in lifelong learning, and these grants will allow Des Plaines Valley residents and other grant recipients to bridge the digital divide and offer critical services that will hopefully allow more Illinoisans to lead better, more productive lives.”
