June 21: Summertime Events, Activities Begin

1. It’s officially summer

June 21 is the summer solstice, marking both the official start of the season and the longest day of the year (at least in terms of how many hours of sunlight we'll get) for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere. Check out Patch's list of things you might not know about the sunniest season.

2. It’s not too late to sign up for Summer Reading

Registration is still under way for the Des Plaines Valley Public Library District’s summer reading program. Kids who sign up will receive a certificiate for a f, courtesy of the Nancy’s Pizza locations in Bolingbrook and Naperville.

3. Movies Under the Stars kicks off Friday

Another great summertime activity is getting under way this week, as the village kicks off its series with a screening of “Shrek Forever After.”

5. Featured announcement: Event keeps thousands of books out of landfills

The Will County Resource Recovery and Energy Division held a , giving book-lovers the chance to make trades and get rid of unwanted books. About 40,000 books changed hands, and another 4,000 were recycled.
