Cooling Centers Available in Romeoville, Will County

Village: Residents should also check to make sure elderly, disabled neighbors are OK.

As the area heads into a sixth day of 90-degree weather (not to mention a heat index of more than 100 degrees), Will County has issued a list of nearly 50 cooling centers that people can turn to for an escape from the heat.

In Romeoville, residents without air conditioning can take refuge at Romeoville Fire Department’s Fire Station 3, 698 N. Birch Lane. The Romeoville Recreation Center, 900 W. Romeo Road, is also open to residents during normal business hours, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The village is also asking residents to check on their elderly or disabled neighbors, or contact a Romeoville Fire Department shift commander at 815- 378-1343 to arrange for someone to check on them.

“Will County is equipped to assist (residents) during this heat wave by providing cooling centers, some open around the clock," Will County Board Chairman Jim Moustis said. "I encourage those without air conditioning to utilize these locations and advise your neighbors and the elderly of the same.”

According to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, the area is expected to have three more days in which temperatures will be 90-91 during the day and in the mid-70s at night. There doesn't appear to be a break until Monday, when the high is predicted to be 86 and the low 66.

The good news, however, is heat indices may be dropping slightly so it may not feel like it's 100 degrees or higher, forecasters say.

There is between a 30 and 50 percent chance of thunderstorms every day through Sunday night, the forecast says. If they develop, they could be severe, withe possibility of high winds, frequent lightning and hail.
