Census: Population Soars But Age Demographics Stay Largely the Same

As with a decade ago, the average Romeoville resident is about 30 years old.

Between 2000 and 2010, the population in Romeoville nearly doubled, rising from 21,153 to 39,680. But although the number of residents in the village increased, the age breakdown didn't change much, according to 2010 U.S. census data.

A decade ago, the average resident was just shy of 30. In 2010, the average Romeovillian became slightly — very slightly — older, with the median age of 31.3 years old.

The ratio of males to females didn't change much either, staying almost 50/50 over the last decade.

The number of Romeoville's youngest residents — those under 5 — has decreased a bit. That age group represented 9.1 percent of the population 10 years ago but fell to 8.1 percent in 2010.

The percentage of senior citizens 65 and older also fell, dropping from 7.2 percent in 2000 to 5.7 percent last year. The largest share of the population, those who are somewhere between 18 and 64, stayed about the same, representing 65.7 percent of residents in 2000 and 62.2 percent in 2010.
