The pilot program is beginning in one second grade classroom two times per month for one hour each session.  Upcoming sessions will be held on February 4, 18 and March 4.  Residents from Senior Star at Weber Place, many of whom are retired teachers, visit the classroom and read to the students and, in turn, students read to the residents.  Students rotate in small groups for more individualized attention as the program is designed to target any early issues they may have with reading skills or other learning challenges in addition to fostering the importance of building a rapport with the community.  “Anytime we can have children working with seniors is a good thing.  We have so much to learn and appreciate from them,” said Linda DiLeo, principal of Central Elementary.  “This program is a win-win for students and community members.  Students have the opportunity to hone their reading skills and discover their academic strengths and challenges, and seniors have the opportunity to teach young children the importance of school, learning and working together.”
