New Lenox resident wins Top Company Award

Steve Duran, maintenance mechanic and safety committee chairperson for Midwest Generation at the company’s Will County Station, has been awarded the 2013 President’s Award of Midwest Generation’s parent company, Edison Mission Energy (EME). Duran is one of six recipients from more than 1,000 employees nationwide to receive this award, which recognizes outstanding achievement by employees who model EME's values of teamwork, excellence, respect, continuous improvement and integrity in how they work and live.
Duran’s responsibilities include the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment used in the process of generating electricity. In 36 years at Will County, he has seen his share of safety incidents, leading him to assume a key leadership role in safety at the plant.

“As chair of the station's safety committee for nearly four years, Steve has been a major reason that Will County has surpassed five years without an injury,” said Pedro Pizarro, president of Edison Mission Energy. “He has taken on this role in addition to his regular job, and has challenged both management and labor to improve on safety by sharing his own experiences helping colleagues injured in past incidents years ago.”

Midwest Generation's plants in Illinois provide enough electricity to meet the needs of more than four million homes. The company is a subsidiary of Edison Mission Energy, based in Santa Ana, Calif., which operates, owns or has ownership interests in nearly 40 power facilities that generate electricity from coal, natural gas and wind.
