Smucker's Recalls Natural Peanut Butter

Company says it distributed 3,000 jars that may be tainted by salmonella.

J.M. Smucker Co. is recalling thousands of jars of chunky variety Natural Peanut Butter in numerous states, including Illinois, due to possible salmonella contamination, the Washington Post reports.

Affected by the recall are 16-ounce jars with "best by" dates of  Aug. 3, 2012 and Aug. 4, 2012 and production codes 1307004 and 1308004. The jars would have been purchased in the last week or so, according to the company. The recall affects roughly 3,000 jars.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people recover within a week, but some may require hospitalization. In rare cases, the infection can be fatal.
