Fannie May Recalls 12,000 Boxes of Chocolates

The heart-shaped box of candy is being recalled due to allergy risks.

Fannie May is voluntarily recalling 12,000 heart-shaped boxes of chocolates because some of the candies contain peanuts — a fact that is not disclosed on the package.

"Individuals who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they come in contact with or consume this product," the candy maker said in a release regarding the recall.

The company issued the voluntary recall on Feb. 19, warning that the 4-ounce, red heart-shaped boxes include one piece of candy that contains peanuts, "and the food ingredient label on the box did not state that the product contained peanuts."

The red heart-shaped box measures 5-1/4" by 5-1/2" and contains eight pieces of assorted chocolates, including one caramel/peanut candy. The box has a rose motif foil paper with the name “Fannie May” in silver lettering along the right side of the box and a label in the upper left stating “Fannie May Assorted Chocolates NET WT. 4 oz. 113g.” The back of the box has a full nutritional label which also states: “This product has been produced on equipment shared with peanuts, treenuts, soybean, milk, eggs and wheat."

The item is identified as SKU #77202 with the UPC number on the label of 0 52745 96000 2. Lot information on this product is 13344, 13345, 13361, 14010 and 14014.

The boxes were sold beginning Jan. 10 in up to 450 drug stores, grocery stores and gift shops in seven states: Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Arizona and Florida.

Retailers that sold the product include Walgreens, Hallmark and Jewel grocery stores, as well as others, according to the company. The product was not sold in any of the Fannie May retail stores, and was not available on the Fannie May website.

The company said so far there has been one report of an individual who had an allergic reaction after consuming the product, adding the individual was treated and released from further medical care. Fannie May said it's not aware of any other incidents of allergic reactions or illnesses.

Consumers who purchased the Fannie May 4.0 oz. red heart-shaped box of assorted chocolates are urged to dispose of the product, the company said in a release. For more information, customers can also call 330-494-0833 between 9:30 and 6:30 p.m. Central time or email customerservice@fanniemay.com.
