Lewis Flight Team Climbs to New High on Wings of Loening Trophy

Aviation department will be presented with the prestigious national award during a ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 26, at Lewis University.

The Loening Trophy will be landing soon at Lewis University.

"We are proud of our dedicated Flight Team students, faculty and staff for meriting the historic Loening Trophy as well as for excelling in knowledge and flight skills at SAFECON," Brother James Gaffney, FSC, president of Lewis University, stated in a news release to announce Lewis' prize.

The Lewis Flight Team placed eighth overall, won numerous individual awards and captured the Loening Trophy at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) hosted recently by Ohio State University.

And the Lewis University Aviation Departement will be presented with the national award during an on-campus ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 26. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m.

"The award represents superb achievement in aeronautical skills and signifies that Lewis University sets the standard for an overall outstanding collegiate aviation program," Gaffney stated. "Our commitment to the future of aviation and our emphasis on academics, community involvement, aviation skills, a comprehensive safety program and professionalism were keys reasons for this award."
