Quick: What accounts for the lion’s share of Valley View School District 365U’s operating budget?
Salaries and benefits, according to a Bugle Newspapers report.
The report says 56.9 percent of the district’s total budget—$243 million—goes to cover the cost of paying wages and benefits to district employees. The two line items (salary $138.4 million) and benefits (14.1 million) add up to a total of $152.5 million, according to the Bugle report.
The report says the Valley View School board OK’d an operating budget for 2013-14 at a recent meeting that represents a slight increase over the previous school year’s operating budget.
“We’ve increased the operating budget by $2.2 million, which is only a 1.3 percent increase so it shows that we really (are) trying to hold the line,” stated Assistant Superintendent Gary Grizaffi in the Bugle report. “This is the lowest increase in recent memory.”
