Watch Out for High Winds, Threat of Tornadoes Sunday

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning, effective from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Winds will likely increase by early afternoon, with the possibility of widespread gusts of up to 60 mph, especially in mid- to late-afternoon. Wind speeds should ease up by Sunday evening. The high winds could create the potential for downed tree limbs and power lines, along with minor structural damage to buildings and hazardous driving conditions.

A cold front and powerful storm system is also expected to move into the area Sunday afternoon, with the possibility for severe thunderstorms. There is the potential for severe weather threats, damaging winds gusts and possibly tornadoes, according to the NWS.

The Joliet/Will County area is included in a "moderate risk" area, according to the Joliet Weather Center.

"As these storms develop, intensify and move toward our area, the main threats will be heavy torrential rains, dangerous cloud to ground lightning, damaging and destructive winds and possibly isolated tornadoes," the weather center posted on Facebook. " ... Heed any warnings and do not take this situation lightly. Seek shelter immediately if storms move in, even if warnings are not issued."
