The Price of Prom

The costs add up quickly for teens' big night.

Any way you slice it, prom’s a pricey proposition.

Here’s a breakdown of what it costs for the average Romeoville promgoer these days — and some ways to save:

  • The dress – It depends on what you’re looking for. At David’s Bridal, dress prices range from the low $100s to $300. For girls looking to scoop up a bargain, the chain is currently running a sale, offering 50 percent off on select styles. Sale prices start at $59.50, but all sales are final.
  • The tux – At Kosack’s Black Tie Formalwear, which has a location Joliet, tuxedo rentals can run you anywhere from $65 for your basic black, one-button jacket tuxedo on up to $145 for higher-end designer tuxedos from labels like Calvin Klein. Right now, promgoers can get $40 off a tuxedo rental or text “PROM” to 46786 for the chance to win a free rental. Prices were a little higher at Men’s Wearhouse, with and at the Westfield Louis Joliet Mall, ranging from $113.98 to $164.
  • Hair, makeup and nails – Over at , prom hairstyles start at $35. Prices vary depending on hair length, according to owner Lou Aguirre. Girls who have their hair done at Lou’s can add makeup application for another $15. With the May 6 Romeoville High School prom right around the corner, staff encouraged promgoers to book their appointments now by calling 815-886-3263. At , depending on the hairstyle and length, ’dos start at $40 to $50. Alexis also offers manicures starting at $25 and $25 pedicures. For appointments call 815-267-8890.
  • The transportation – Getting there in style isn’t cheap. A four-hour package including a 10-person limo is $95 per hour (excluding the time spent at prom) at The Limousine Service (815-230-9433) in Romeoville. American Classic Limousines (815-372-3560) in Crest Hill offers a five-hour, 10-person package for $600, which includes a tip for the driver.

Girls not looking to spend big bucks on a dress they might only wear once can also rent dresses at , according to peer mediation coach Krista Simpson. To borrow a donated dress, girls must put down a $10 deposit. They get their money back when they return the dress after having it dry cleaned post-prom, Simpson said. If that's too steep, the school will work with students.

“If there is an issue with the $10, then we just waive that fee and ask that the dress is returned clean,” Simpson said.

To maintain confidentiality, girls can come in before or after school to browse dresses.

“They will bring their friends and try on a couple of dresses and then make their choice,” Simpson said. “It has been a fun experience for everyone.”

Promgoers can also save $20 per couple if they buy their tickets by Thursday. Ticket prices for RHS’ “Mystery Masquerade" prom will increase from $100 per couple to $120 starting Monday, April 25. The last day to get tickets is Friday, April 29.
