Golf Outing Will Fund RHS Athletic Scholarships

Over seven years, the annual Athletic Boosters event has raised nearly $100,000.

More than 100 golfers turned out last week to help support the Athletic Boosters. Their aim: to fund more than a dozen scholarships for outstanding student athletes.

Golfers turned out on Aug. 4, playing 18 holes at , before heading over to for dinner, raffles and more.

Former Boosters treasurer Rudy Luevano, who continues to organize the , said this year’s outing drew 114 golfers — four fewer than last year, but that didn’t matter.

“It actually made more money than last year,” Luevano said, adding that over the years, the event has raised nearly $100,000 to fund scholarships for college-bound athletes.

“Sponsors stepped up,” he added, saying that event supporters were more generous than in years past.

Back when the outing was created, the Boosters typically offered about $2,000 in scholarships each year. Last year, that grew to 15 scholarships of $1,000 each, Luevano said.

“I don’t anticipate any different this year,” he said.

There are also more nominees, according to Luevano. Historically, scholarship candidates have been nominated by coaches. Early on, there were a dozen or so students nominated each year.

“This past year, my understanding is we had about 44 to 46 nominations,” he noted. “Now we’re getting the cream of the crop.”

According to Luevano, the event was created in part by Athletic Director Jim Boudouris, who now serves as RHS' assistant principal for athletics and activities.

“He said, ‘Can’t we come up with a way to get more scholarship money for the kids?’” Luevano said. Boosters members settled on a golf outing to raise money, and since then, the event has grown and evolved.

Luevano said organizers can count on RHS alumni turning out for the outing each year.

“People look forward to it every year,” he said.
