Fundraiser Launched to Help Family of Romeoville Shooting Victims

Residents pitch in to help after a 15-year-old was killed and her mother injured in a Feb. 13 shooting.

A Romeoville mom has launched a GoFundMe site to help the family of the mother and daughter shot Thursday morning as they sat in their car.

The page created by Anna Little-Maloney is intended to help pay for medical expenses and now, tragically, funeral costs, after the 15-year-old victim succumbed to her injuries.

Little-Maloney doesn't know the family, but said she launched the site after talking to Shelie Jones, a neighbor of victims Briana Valle and her 33-year-old mother. The teen was shot twice in the head while her mother, listed in good condition at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, was shot in the neck.

Erick Maya, the 23-year-old ex-boyfriend of the teen, has been charged in the shootings and is being held on $5 million bond.

"I'm a mother of six," Little-Maloney said. "I can't imagine losing one of my kids."

As of late Sunday night, the site had raised close to $800 for the family, who reportedly moved to Romeoville for a fresh start.

"They came here to get away from the violence and to have a better life," Little-Maloney said.

Will County court records show that the teen's mother recently took out an emergency order of protection against Maya in an effort to keep him away from the teen.

Little-Maloney said she wanted to find a way to help the family.

"The only way I could think to do it immediately is the GoFundMe [site]," she said. Click here to donate via the GoFundMe page.

A lifelong Romeoville resident, Little-Maloney also said she doesn't want the crime to give the community a bad name.

"I want our community to come together," she said. "We have a lot of good people here."

Little-Maloney said plans are also in the works for a fundraiser event.

While a time and date have yet to be determined, organizers are looking for individuals and businesses to donate raffle items to the cause. To get involved, contact Little-Maloney at 815-219-6870.
