'Day of the Immigrant' Set for July 20 in Romeoville

Event will include music and dance performances, speeches by local dignitaries.

The Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project (SSIP) will celebrate the contributions of local immigrants by hosting "Day of the Immigrant," from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Deer Crossing Park, 1050 W. Romeo Rd.

SSIP community organizer Jose Eduardo Vero said the organization is especially excited for the celebration as an immigrant bill moves through Congress.

The July 20 event will center on the theme "Sharing Our American Dream," and will kick off with a series of speeches by local dignitaries and testimonials from immigrant families, according to a press release from SSIP.

Vero said confirmed guests include Mayor John Noak of Romeoville, Mayor Roger Claar of Bolingbrook, State Sen Pat McGuire (D-Joliet) and Congressman Bill Foster (D-11th).

The event will also include music and dance performances, ending with a showing of the movie "A Better Life."

"The event's main purpose is to strengthen the voices of the immigrant community living in the southwest suburbs," SSIP said in a press release. "This year, 'Day of the Immigrant' will bring awareness to the need [for] immigration reform through a cultural entertainment exposition and resource fair."
