Causes of Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can be caused by a variety of conditions that include the following:

• Rotator cuff tears (partial or full thickness)

• Various types of arthritis (bone on bone)

• Biceps tendinosis, avulsion, or dislocation

• Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)

• Acromioclavicular arthritis (arthritis where the clavicle meets the shoulder)

• Acromioclavicular joint instability

• Infection

• Neck problems

“Common symptoms of shoulder pain sometimes indicate that a serious problem may exist,” said Dr. Seshadri. “If you can’t lift your shoulder overhead or are unable to complete common actions of daily life, it may be worthwhile to get a medical opinion.”

A variety of remedies are available to relieve shoulder pain from medications, therapy to surgery. “To determine the best plan of care to treat your shoulder pain, people should see an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in treatment of such conditions.”
