Univision Donates TV Broadcast Equipment to Lewis

As part of a partnership with the university, Univision donates digital control room, news set, cameras, news truck and more.

recently received a significant donation of television broadcast equipment from Univision/Chicago. The donation includes an entire digital control room, news set, robotic television cameras and a live news truck, among other items.

“The technology will allow our students to have major television market technology experience," said John Carey, director of the Andrew Center of Electronic Media at Lewis. "Large market production switchers, video and audio routers, VTR play out, camera robotics, and intercoms. This will not only enhance our facility, but continue to give our current and future students a competitive edge in major market broadcasting and television production.” 

Univision is in the process a multi-million dollar HDTV upgrade to their facilities in Chicago. As part of the transition, they are donating surplus equipment to Lewis University.

Univision/Chicago’s connection with Lewis University has been ongoing for numerous years. Lewis University alumni P. Douglas Becker and Eugene Garcia are managers in the traffic department. Univision/Chicago Director of Engineering John Freberg is a 35-year adjunct professor at Lewis University, and teaches 3D video production and broadcast engineering courses. Student Maribel Barrera of Romeoville is the latest student to intern at Univision/Chicago. She is currently interning in engineering and operation management.

Donated items include: a news set, a digital matrix intercom system with 12 multi-user stations, a 30-input digital television production switcher, digital and analog video/audio router, individual router remote heads, control router interface unit and router software, three robotic television tripod pedestals, remote control systems, touch screen monitor, three digital studio television cameras, various cables, camera control units,  multi-video viewer,  two analog cable TV demodulator, analog FM tuner, digital sync generator, digital audio test equipment, LCD video monitors, distribution amps, various digital convertor systems cards and switching cards, live news truck and production automation software.
