TV 'Invited' Burglar to Enter Building: Police
Michael Kay is accused of disconnecting the power and attempting to push his way into an apartment before Joliet police arrived to arrest him, reports said.
A burglary suspect told Joliet police he wasn't as much breaking into an apartment building early Saturday morning as coming in on an invitation -- one issued by the television inside.
"He made a statement to officers that he saw the TV on inside and it told him to come in," Police Cmdr. Rich Demick said.
Regardless of the invitation, the doors were locked and police say Michael Kay, 25, forced his way into the 1022 Kelly Ave. building at about 1:50 a.m.. He then removed fuses to disconnect the electricty and attempted to push his way into an apartment.
The first-floor residents told police that shortly after the electricty went out, they heard someone coming up the basement stairs, Demick said. Kay tried to come in through their apartment door, but was prevented from doing so when the tenants held their weight against it, he said.
As he made his way up to the second floor, the tenants called their neighbors to alert them and then called the police, Demick said.
Officers arrived to find Kay still inside the building and took him into custody.
Kay, who lives at 1025 Wilcox in Joliet, acknowledged he had been going into the basement at night to look for "anything good to steal," Demick said. But he also told them he believed he had been invited in by a television he saw when looking into one of the apartment windows, he said.
Demick said he did not know if Kay was intoxicated or on drugs, but officers noted that he was "sort of meandering around and disheveled."
He added that Kay listed his occupation as a tarot card reader.
Kay was charged with residential burglary and is being held in Will County jail in lieu of $75,000 bond. He was also arrested on a warrant for his failure to appear at a court hearing for a September 2012 arrest for felony possession of a controlled substance, according to jail records.
In addition to that arrest, he was also charged with domestic battery in March 2012, records show.
