Trustee Says McMichael Broke Election Law

Romeoville mayoral candidate Steve McMichael declined to discuss the allegations, saying he wasn't "going to be a knee-jerk politician."

Steve McMichael, former Chicago Bears football player and Romeoville mayoral candidate, addressed the media Tuesday at an impromptu press conference spurred by an election disclosure complaint filed by Romeoville Village Trustee Ken Griffin.

He and his attorney, Lisa Marie Raucci, said it was too "premature" to issue a statement about the specifics of the complaint, which allege McMichael violated state law by not filing campaign paperwork, fundraising and expenses with the state.

They plan to address it through the "appropriate channels," Raucci said.

"I'm not going to be a knee-jerk politician," McMichael said, adding that the complaint will not deter him from the three-way mayoral race against incumbent John Noak and former mayor Fred Dewald.

"I'm an American, not an Ameri-can't," he said.

Griffin filed the charge with the Illinois State Board of Elections on Dec. 26, the same day McMichael filed his petitions to be on the April 9 election ballot,

Griffin's complaint says the committee supporting McMichael's bid did not file a statement of organization within 10 days of raising or spending $3,000, the story said. He also said the Chicago Slaughter indoor football team violated the law by not reporting the cost of the "Mongo for Mayor" T-shirts its selling, a Joliet Herald New story said.

McMichael offered few details about his platform Tuesday, saying that he will continue to release more information closer to the election. He did say that he believes the town is "mismanaged" and there are too many foreclosures, which are driving down property values.

"I've always sacrificed myself for the greater good, when I played for the Bears and God knows when I wrestled," he said. He added that he would run the village through "teamwork," if elected.

I like the way McMichael handled this. Apparently Noak is running scared.

I've lived in Romeoville for 15 years and our town didn't really start growing until John Noak became Mayor. He's done a FANTASTIC job and has MY VOTE!!! His prior experience with Govt is why we've become such a "sought after" community to live in and where businesses want to relocate.

Not sure how foreclosures have to do with town mismanagement. I am not sure McMichael knows what a mayor's job duties are.

I think everybody is missing the obvious here. It's not who you like but the dirty politics that is coming about. After McMichael made it official as a candidate for mayor, all of a sudden Dewald came out of the woodwork to run again. I didn't even know he was back in town. Then it hit me. Noak is threatened by McMichael and instead of "letting the best man win" he then called his buddy Dewald to run in order to take votes away from McMichael. With all the dirty politics in Illinois, I was proud to be a resident of Romeoville because none of this was going on here. Well, now it is. Don't make me ashamed of my Village as that is all we have left to add to the disgrace of this state.

Noak uses village property (all the sign posts) for his signs, and this is ok. NOT!! That is theft of our money. Spartan square sat empty all these years, now right before election something is getting done there, Fishy to me. Dewald was a drunk, don't know if he still is or not. Noak complains about McMichael on radio gig. Really get a life. I don't want to see Noak on TV either. Take him off of channel six. IT IS NOT FAIR to MONGO. McMichael has my vote!!!!!

Why would anyone with any intelligence want to replace Mayor Noak? He has revitalized Romeoville, bringing in new tax base with new business, creating jobs, and taking the village to new levels, all while generating a surplus leading to tax rebates over the past two years! Get the facts, don't believe the hype, John Noak is a great leader for Romeoville.

Steve McMichael should run for a trustee position to learn our local Government then maybe he could be taken seriously. He says he wants a better school system....he lives in Plainfield school district and the Mayor of Romeoville doesn't do much if anything concerning schools, but even if he did, it wouldn't be in Plainfield school system. Many people will vote for Steve McMichael because of celebrity st?atus. That's not a reason he could do anything but tell people exactly what they want to hear so that he hears exactly what he wants to hear......that is ego not management style. Anyone wanting him to manage our town and move us ahead should realize that he has to platform. Doesn't realize that the entire County of Will has foreclosure because this is where the housing boom was....many people were talked into houses they could not really afford. A lot of talk....what does he think this is a wrestling match?
