Stolen Puppy Returned to Store: Employee
Krista Zarbock, an employee of the Furry Babies, confirmed the 2-month-old chihuahua was back; Joliet police could not be reached for comment.
The tiny puppy snatched from a pet store in the Louis Joliet Mall Friday night has been returned safely, a store employee said Monday night.
Krista Zarbock, who works for the Furry Babies store, was the first to sound the alarm about the theft of the 2-month-old blue chihuahua, contacting media outlets on Saturday and posting a note and photos on the Joliet Patch Facebook page.
A subsequent story posted on Joliet Patch generated dozens of leads, Joliet Police Chief Mike Trafton said Monday.
Although the details of the 1.5-pound female dog's return weren't available from police Monday night, Zarbock posted this note on Joliet Patch's Facebook site at about 10 p.m. Monday:
"Our Chihuahua is safe!!! Thank you to the Joliet Police Department, NBC Channel 5, ABC 7 Chicago, Lost Dogs Illinois, Joliet and Plainfield Patch and all the wonderful people that helped share her story!!! Thank you to all of the amazing people that shared the video and pictures every day and everyone that was involved in bringing her back safely. I also want to thank the person that brought her back to us and did the right thing for the puppy!!! All the true dog lovers out there and the people who took the time out of their day to share the story with others, you are the reason she is now safe!!!! I cannot thank you enough!!!"
Joliet police could not be reached for comment Monday night. More information on the dog's return and if an arrest was made will be posted Tuesday.

Please don't patronize these awful stores. Just because the dogs are displayed in cribs doesn't mean they didn't come from puppy mills. And selling mutts as $2000 "designer dogs" is just shameful when there are thousands of dogs available for adoption.

Rarebit you are so right on about this. I'll bet 99% of puppies bought at furry babies are impulse buys. And, the fact that they offer financing is a huge problem. How are these people going to pay for food and vetting if they have to finance a puppy?!?! 80% of puppies end up in a different home or are dumped at a shelter. That includes puppies bought for hundreds and thousands of dollars. A co-worker adopted an Apricot Poodle that was found on Ogden Ave in Lisle sitting in the freezing rain. Someone paid good money for that dog and if they really wanted it back they would have done so. Just because they are fancy little expensive dogs does not mean they will be treated properly. ADOPT in Naperville took that poor pup in. And, an even darker side to the fate of puppy mill mama and daddy dogs - many of them are taken to auction once the breeders are done with them. The lucky ones are bought by rescue groups for a few bucks. The unfortunate ones are subjected to the same miserable life, just in a different cage and with different, greedy humans who need to get a real job.

Thank goodness somebody said this. Thank you rarebit. People need to know that these dogs come from puppymills who breed the mother who stays in a cage gets no break between litters and often the puppies later develope health issues that cost thousands of dollars to correct which usually results in the animal being euthanized. And then the cycle starts all over again.
Buy your animal responsibly or better yet...adopt. Unfortunately, we are an instant gratification society with no patience and as someone in a comment above mine said...usually are impulse buys.

Well said Rarebit. I volunteer at a shelter, and we have had several "Furry Babies" surrendered to us. In some cases, these dogs were "bought" 2 or 3 years ago and have not had any subsequent vet care. A dog is not an accessory to be purchased and discarded when it's no longer "in season".

Close that store! I refuse to even walk passed it. I have 3 rescued animals from shelters...that is how it should be done!

Relax people-remember-dogs are beasts and have no soul so they won't be joining you in the afterlife. Plus they eat their own crap and puke and pigs are more intelligent

Well you're a pig and you don't sound intelligent. There might be a God to decide these things but you're not him. Animals feel pain and fear and are God's creatures just as much as much as people are. In your case, more so. BTW brave of you to make such an ignorant statement anonymously. Roger? is that you Roger????
Just my opinion

$2000 for ANY pet is too damn much. This puppy mill distributor should be closed. You finance a car and houses; not animals. So does the dog get repo'ed if you don't pay? What a joke.

Right on!
These stores are a trap for the impulse buyer. Sometimes I walk around in the store and talk under my breath to the people who are seriously looking. "Ask them how you get in touch with the breeder if you have a problem."
And never get a pet from ANYWHERE until you have thought about it, talked about it, read about it, and know what work and expense you are getting into! Puppies grow up, need health care, food, and attention!

I don't shop at stratford square mall now that they have a furry babies there. I will partronize that mall once they close down furry babies. The other malls that have furry babies are in areas that are hurting for business so they let these morally debased businesses set up shop on their premises. Completely irresponsible on their part.

@ anonymous - Regardless if you believe animals have souls or not, that is not the issue here. Dogs can feel pain, fear, loneliness, and depression - especially when they are puppy mill dogs. I don't think you would be making your ignorant remarks if you took walk through a typical puppy mill. Google it or search on Youtube. Oh, I forgot, you will never be allowed in a puppy mill because they don't want you to see the horrors of what goes on in there.
