So Long: A Fond Farewell to Romeoville

Starting Monday, I'll be taking a new position as editor of Plainfield Patch.

A little over a year ago — 17 months, to be exact — my career took a turn I never could have envisioned in my days as a college journalism major.

I became an online journalist, launching something that’s become known to some of you as “the Patch.”

It was a labor of love, building the site from the ground up, and it was nerve wracking. What if nobody reads it? What if nobody comments? What if I can’t get the hang of the sometimes frantic pace of reporting news on the Internet?

But you — the people who read Romeoville Patch every day, pop in occasionally or rely the newsletter sent straight to your inbox — embraced Patch, giving me the chance to do what I’ve loved doing for nearly a decade now. You let me be your source for community news and allowed me to tell your stories.

Now, it’s with a mix of sadness, joy and excitement that I let you in on one more bit of “breaking news.”

Effective Monday, I’ll be hanging up my hat as editor of Romeoville Patch, but I won’t be going far. In fact, I’ll be taking the reins at Plainfield Patch, one of Romeoville’s closest neighbors.

In a way, the move is a bit like going home. I covered Plainfield for eight years as staff writer for The Enterprise newspaper, where I honed my skills and discovered my love of community journalism.

I can’t tell you all how much I’ve loved getting to know Romeoville, so while I’m excited to return to Plainfield, the move is slightly bittersweet.

But don’t worry — Patch isn’t abandoning you.

Also starting Monday, will become guest editor here at Romeoville Patch. Linda is an amazing journalist with more than 20 years’ experience in community news.

In fact, I learned much of what I know from Linda, who was one of my bosses at The Enterprise and helped me as I learned the ropes as a young journalist, fresh from college.

I know she’ll do a great job and take great care of my Internet “baby,” making it even better, no doubt.

I’ll stay in touch, and odds are good that you’ll still see my byline pop up on the site from time to time.

And I’m sure I’ll see some of you around town. I hear the Friday night fireworks show is coming back to RomeoFest this year, and I don’t intend to miss it.

I’m hope you’ll all give Linda a warm welcome.

And, while you’re at it, feel free to “welcome” our newest member of the Patch family, the soon-to-launch Joliet Patch, by or “liking” its Facebook page
