UPDATE: Ruby Street Bridge Reopened to Traffic Monday

Although Joliet sent out a note last week saying the bridge would not reopen till Wednesday, it was discovered today it was already in use.

UPDATE/12:30 p.m. Feb. 18:

Despite the news release saying the bridge would reopen to traffic on Wednesday, it's actually open now and we have the photo to prove it!

Posted Friday night:

After several delays pushed the date back three months, the Ruby Street Bridge over the Des Plaines River is to reopen to traffic Wednesday, Joliet city officials said Friday.

The Illinois Department of Transportation began doing repairs last summer with a planned reopening in mid-November, but problems with parts and other issues resulted in the date being pushed back three times.

For more information, call the Joliet Public Works Department at 815-724-4200.

I think the City should put a ferry on the river. This way we can still get to the other side. It should be free to all legal taxpayers to use. You can also put in a Starbucks and a donut shop for all of us waiting to cross. The City can get a cut of the profits and put it in an account to build a new stationary bridge.

Its funny how all the union busters think they know it all, because they are so jelous on our pay and bennys.Just cause u put up with a $14 to $17 an hour or maybe even less dont be mad at us,stand up and do something about it.I worked on that bridge sandblasting and painting that old piece of s#@t.Lets see your mamas boy ass get out there and do that job(sandblast)for 8-12 hrs a day without hurting tourself or someone else i can guarante it wouldnt happen. We bust our ass for our pay and deserve every penny of it.We finished in October and there was other issues to be delt with for other craftsmen to do.What do u want to drive over a unsafe bridge everyday, thats the diff between skilled trained union labor and scabby fly by night shops.u wouldnt know the first thing about doing a job of that magnatued. Now go paint your wifes kitchen.

I was a union machinist for 13 years, I know that kind of hard work. There is no coordination of jobs at IDOT, and on those bridges there is always something else coming up. I call BS on you, big man. Somebody isn't doing their job properly, and that's the truth.

You are just another sample why unions are so great.

Unions were established to ensure a proper living wage and safe working conditions; not to guarantee the highest wages and great "bennys" for its members. Now they are veiled political action committees that extort the government for the biggest contracts. They do more harm to the general public than they're worth.

I heard it many a times people saying " I ain't paying no dues" then turn around in the same week and go to work for their temporary service paying them $2 or more an hour and the company does not have to pay benefits because you are a temporary worker.....In Michigan there is a shipping company and know what their "sub" company is?...The temporary service next door that does all the hiring fro their company...and its only getting worse...and after every one stands up and protests against the temp services know what you will be called?...A Union...and what will you be fighting for? better pay and benefits...exactly what the Unions did and do...Why? because as you struggle to pay your bills and feed your family the owner of the companies still charged and most of the time these companies range in the millions in profits from the cheap paid labor of people...That's why there needs to be unions..

Painter, the Machinist Union does suck, and I happened to have gotten hurt on the job and asked to "resign" from my job. My union didn't do a damn thing about it, and the lawyer that my union recommended was too lazy or stupid to be of help either. And I don't drink, by the way. So STFU.

The Patch has been a little boring lately. Opening up the Ruby St bridge will likely increase West side crime, making reading here more exciting.
