Mistwood Scheduled to Reopen in June

Renovations are completed on the Romeoville golf course; new learning center, clubhouse still to come.

After breaking ground in late summer, the first phase of Mistwood Golf Club’s multimillion dollar renovation is complete.

Owner Jim McWethy announced Friday that the remodeled course will reopen in June.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see where we have come with the project. We've created one of the finest courses in the Chicago area,” McWethy said in a press release.

The reconfigured course is designed by Ray Hearn, the architect responsible for Mistwood’s original design when it opened in 1998.

“I am thrilled with the work that Ray performed in upgrading the course to an entirely new level with the aprons around the greens, the new bunkers, tees and the changes to the third hole,” McWethy said.

The completed work includes improvements on all 18 holes.

“Every bunker has been completely renovated,” said Dan Phillips, Mistwood’s director of golf and instruction.

The most noticeable change is the relocation of the third hole, which has been moved to make way for a new Scottish castle-style clubhouse.

Extensive work was also done on the greens to allow for more shot options, Phillips said.

“It just makes the game a lot more fun,” he said.

New clubhouse, learning center in the works

The next portion of the $6 million overhaul will be the construction of a 5,000-square-foot learning center, scheduled to begin this winter.

“It’s going to be a substantial building to allow us to do heated hitting in the winter,” Phillips said. “It’s not your typical learning center.”

Construction on the learning center is scheduled to be completed in time for the June reopening, according to a press release issued by McWethy.

Phillips said it’s still too soon to say when construction will begin on the planned 32,000-square-foot clubhouse, which will replace the existing clubhouse and feature an upscale restaurant and banquet facility.

“It’s a long process,” Phillips said of prepping to build the clubhouse.

A traffic signal is also scheduled to be installed at the course’s new entrance at Renwick and Gaylord Roads.

While the reopening is scheduled for sometime in June, an exact date has not been set.

“We’re looking at Memorial Day weekend,” Phillips said.

At an Oct. 21, 2011 groundbreaking ceremony, McWethy said Mistwood will be “unquestionably one of the finest golf courses in Illinois and also one of the finest facilities in Illinois” when the renovation is completed.

"If you have an exceptional product, market it well, and take great care of your customers, I do believe that — even in this market — you can be successful," he said. "I go to other golf courses today and come back even more excited about what we have done at Mistwood."
