The blaze is believed to have started in the basement, according to fire officials. Firefighters who arrived on the scene found heavy smoke and fire coming from the basement, which was extensively damaged, Hertzmann said.

The building has been turned over to fire investigators, he added, and the residents are staying with relatives until they can get back into the home.

When that will happen is hard to say, Hertzmann said.

“Investigators are out there now,” he said, noting it’s still too early to say what caused the fire.
