Dick's, Walmart Suspend Sales of Certain Guns

The Newtown school shooting has spurred some retailers to suspend firearm sales.

Christmas shopping for the outdoorsman may be a little different this year.

Dick's Sporting Goods, which has Chicago-area locations in Oswego, Naperville, Orland Park, Tinley Park and Yorkville, has suspended sales of semi-automatic weapons at its stores following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, according to a report from CNN.

The chain includes 511 stores in 44 states, and posted this message to its web site:

We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community.

Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.

We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy.

A search of the Dick's Sporting Goods web site for “semi-automatic rifles” produced a handful of paintball guns, but no lethal weapons. A search for “modern sporting rifles” turned up no results.

According to the company’s web site, the chain has 511 stores in 44 states. It’s unclear how long the suspension will last.

A message with the company's communication's department has not been returned.

Walmart

Walmart pulled a Bushmaster rifle that's in the same group of guns as the one reportedly used by Lanza from its web store, according to media reports.

It’s unclear if the chain suspended sales of any other sporting rifles. Searches for “modern sporting rifle,” semi-automatic rifle,” and “bushmaster” displayed guns for sale in stores only. But when checked for availability, all showed as "out of stock."

Patch also left a message with Walmart’s media relations staff, but that message has not been returned.

Do you think the suspension of gun sales at national chains will help prevent future tragedies?

Dicks is at best misguided. A firearm has never killed a person. It takes "intent" by the human behind the gun. Stopping sales for a period of time just will do absoutly nothing to stop these massacres. but this will. Several states have already or are in the process of passing legislation to allow teachers to be trained and armed, turning our criminal kill zones into truly school safe zones. Several states are ......

I love how all these pro-gun people are trying to force teachers to carry guns. Did they ever stop to think whether the teachers themselves actually want that?

Two different teachers unions say NO to that stupid idea.

I respect the 2nd amendment, although I have no desire to own a gun. However, can't we meet half way? If someone wants to partake in hunting, do you really need a semi-automatic to do so? 30 round clips? I'm not saying ban all guns because people will do things they set their minds to regardless. I'm just saying let's get rid of the guns that can take out 20 people in about 30 seconds. I don't think anyone except the military needs that kind of firepower.

The question is when you say semi auto-matic. Where do you draw the line. Most 9mm handguns are semi -automatic. Do you eliminate all those. You can purchase a shotgun in semi automatic do those go as well? There have been handgun bans in cook county for many years. Did that stop people from owning a handgun nope. If you have a ban I thing you can count on Ida mass amount of people who go out and buy a gun just to get it pre-ban.

13 people killed or seriously injured over a three-week span by the Washington, D.C.-area snipers, John Muhammad and Lee Malvo. The pair used a .223 Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle, similar to the one police said was used by Adam Lanza to kill 20 children in 6 adults with brutal efficiency in Newtown last week.

Enough is enough. These weapons have NO place on our streets. The 2nd amndment does not give you the right to own any kind of weapon you want. They need to go for good and people have had it. Much more needs to be done but this gun culture and violence needs to stop. Saying it won't change anything is saying you won't accept any solutions and in turn what is going on is acceptable. Enough is enough. People have a simple choice, be a part of the solution or part of the problem.

I couldnt agree with you more. Just like the 1st Amendment doesn't allow you to say anything you want, at anytime, there should be limits placed on what type of weapons citizens should be able to own.

As a Canadian, it surprises me how many guns exist in the U.S. (270 million of the world's 870 million supply), how easy they are to get and that virtually anyone can carry one, concealed. More astonishing is your outrage when your 2nd amendment rights seem to be under fire. No wonder you have a murder issue. Wal-Mart is on the right track here: reducing the supply is a better approach. I've read your second amendment and believe it's grossly misunderstood and mis-interpreted. If you need a well-armed militia, doesn't your military and your police forces serve that purpose?Time to amend your amendment. Look at other democracies around the globe. Compared to the U.S., they're doing just fine - lower murder rates, etc. -without the need for everyone to pack a pistol.

Richard,
You are not aware of the criteria necessary for concealed carry or all the regulations and laws. There are 8 million law-abiding citizens trained and licensed to carry concealed firearms. You have school shootings in Canada too. Do some research.

If crime rates will go down due to guns being restricted or banned, then cops will not have a need either. Right? Chicago has had a ban for sometime, has anything changed there? Nope, and cops are armed to the teeth still. Why? I also find it odd that we send our kids to school for 8-10 hrs. a day and we inherently trust these teachers to protect and care for our kids. However, we can not trust them if armed or it is absolutely shocking to suggest we do so for further protection against the animals that prey on our societies weaknesses?

Talk about being paranoid. The death penalty is supposed to be a deterrent. Texas has executed more criminals than any other state. If the death penalty is supposed to be a deterrent, you would think crimes that get the death penalty in Texas would be close to zero.

"..Like example Switzerland right now has over 500,000 registered AR-15's know how many times they have been invaded. Not a once"

How many times has the US been invaded? Doesn't the US have the best military in the world. After all how much do we spend on our military?

I was beginning to think it was for attention because I though no one can really be that stupid to think it would be a safer nation if citizens were unarmed..but then I kept reading your ignorance and seen it was not for show people can really be that stupid to think it is not their responsibility to protect themselves....as I said before you just go a head an see what that police report will do for ya...and let others see what their guns will do for them...parinoid yeah parinoid people like you who want to mold the world to fit their means and not seeing stuff for what it is,creating more victims by waiting for someone to save them...put a sign up in your front yard saying you do not believe in guns and watch how fast your house gets robbed bud and you know it.

I have posted a number of links where gun control laws work in other countries to dispute your so-called facts, but you can care less. You always come up with BS execuse as to why they will not work in the US. You don't even want to consider control laws in this country. Instead you feel the answer to the gun problem is more guns, more powerful guns and arming everyone to the hilt.

If there were no guns, there were be no gun violence.

Yeah, that's why the world is concerned that Syria will use chemical weapons (weapons of mass distruction) on its own people. Humm, where do you think the Syrians got the chemical weapons? Intelligence was telling us back in the early 2000's that Saddam sent his WMD to Syria to hide them for him. Guess the intelligence wasn't that far off.

Now back on topic: Ask Rahm Emanuel how the gun control laws in Chicago are working for him. Not down playing the Sandy Hill incident, but what about the AA teenagers and children getting gunned down every weekend in Chicago and DC, two cities with "tough" gun laws? Look at the damage done, children killed while sitting in there homes, sitting on their porches, and walking through their neighborhoods? Or don't you care because they're black?

Know what you would have if you tried to confinscate guns? More gun violence..just like drugs..the more the governments pushed the more violent it became...yes there are people in the U.S. that will fire guns over politics defending the 2nd Ammendment..Just like drug cartels and even drug users do when you try to take their drugs away...if you ban guns you just moved them to the top of the most expensive thing on the black market dummies...just like drugs, alcohol and everything else prohibition has shown to make more deadly...just try it and watch how the violence gets you locked in your house at 6 o'clock, watch how fast we become a military country..who do you complain to then? Not the police...violence is a part of everyday life some people have not broken away from their animal instincts to just kill with no remorse...yes this is bad but how many people did Gasey kill with no guns,Dalmer the same,Ted Bundy, they have killed more with no guns...you will not be safer banning guns.you will create more violence, and the violence will be more horrific,.realisticly shot is better than being stabbed to death, shot is better than being tortured, shot is better than throat being cut and waiting to die..let's be real here ...most spouces are beat to beath that's pretty horrific..that's worse than a quick death..violence will always be a part of life it is time we learned to quit sheltering our lives and creating more victims...I would rather be shot than any of these I mentioned..

If the media covered guns without tragedy as a background, you would learn that guns save lives, which is why we want our police heavily armed, with high-capacity magazines, and high-powered rifles, and all the ammunition they can carry. You would learn that you need guns and ammo and full-capacity magazines -- for the exact same reason.

Funny you should mention that. If this weakling stormed the school with a baseball bat, hammer or knife, the death list would be a lot smaller, perhaps non-existent. Throw automatic weapons into the mix and he becomes an evil superhuman who could kill 28 people in the few minutes before first responders could arrive.

You tried to be a smart alec, but you just made the case for tighter gun control laws. Thank you.

Uncle Jesus: Should tighter gun control laws exist to the point where criminals and psychotic individuals had zero access to these guns, they would simply turn to other means to cause chaos and death.

Imagine what horrors could be had by throwing a brick through the window of a school, and following up with a Molotov cocktail or some sort of homemade bomb. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Besides, this "weakling" as you accurately describe him violated three gun control laws in that jurisdiction. Those laws did not protect those children. They won't protect mine, either. Neither would a "No Gun Zone" sign in the parking lot.

If you followed the media on this story, you'll notice some amazing loopholes. I wonder why we haven't heard anything further on the second man in handcuffs on the ground, or the other man chased into the woods? Isn't it odd that Lt. J Paul Vance indicates that independent journalists will be prosecuted if they report anything other than the official story as delivered by his microphone. Something stinks here.

But I digress.

The lunatics will always pose a threat. But guns have the capacity to protect. It's all in the intent of the user.

Any delay in reload might have helped save a child last week...or two...or ten and that makes it worth enacting reasonable laws. No more will people look at those little faces of dead children and simply shrug them off. You might, but the majority of your countrymen will not. The time for contrition is nigh and it is not usefully spent throwing flowers at a murder site and going back home. Reason will once again rule the day whether your are ready or not.

Uncle Jesus: If a delay in reload might have save one child last week, as you speculate, image what good a concealed firearm might have done.

The shooter might have been found dead in the office, his first destination, instead of in a classroom.

So, if we're going to speculate here, let's look at it from both sides of the argument. A properly licensed concealed firearm on the hip or in the purse of a trained civilian would do much better than any gun control law you propose ever could.

Don't believe me? Google Nick Meli Clackamas. I would love to know your thoughts on the Clackamas shooting, with this knowledge.

Again the UNARMED teachers that were "not allowed to carry concealed" was a travesty and the local government , the school system, a bad mother, and evil killer child are responsible for the deaths of the children.

Time to arm every teacher in the nation and give then complete training.

In the wake of the Newtown school shooting , at least 6 states are considering not fewer guns but more guns: Virginia, Tennessee, and others are considering arming their teachers. A Virginia state delegate is proposing a bill that would require some members of school staff to carry guns,asap..

Arm teachers??! Are you insane? As a teacher, I would not want that. I would worry about the safety of the students (and everyone) with a few dozen guns in school. And imagine if a child got their hands on one of these guns? And what about the junior high or high school students? Many of them can easily over-power a teacher - and take the weapon. Just more gun accidents or violence waiting to happen. STUPID idea.

Abstract:
Most states issue permits to carry a concealed handgun for lawful protection to an applicant who is over 21 years of age, and who passes a fingerprint-based background check and a safety class. These permits allow the person to carry a concealed defensive handgun almost everywhere in the state. Should professors, school teachers, or adult college and graduate students who have such permits be allowed to carry firearms on campus?

In the last two years, many state legislatures have debated the topic. School boards, regents, and administrators are likewise faced with decisions about whether to change campus firearms policies.

This Paper is the first to provide a thorough analysis of the empirical evidence and policy arguments regarding licensed campus carry. Whether a reader agrees or disagrees with the Paper's policy recommendations, the Paper can lay the foundation for a better-informed debate, and a more realistic analysis of the issue.

SonofJohn, some people prefer to make decisions on issues based solely on emotions. Some people prefer to use facts and analysis as the basis for their decisions.

Right now, many people are too emotional over what happened to allow a rational, fact-based approach into their decisions. This is understandable. If someone's political inclination is against guns, for whatever reason, then what just happened only servers to fuel their sense of being right. Facts don't enter into the issue, which is why we don't want people making important decisions so soon after an emotional incident. This is no different.

If you notice, most arguments in favor of some sort of gun control in this thread don't have anything to do with the guns themselves. They deal with the mental state of the person or the time it takes to reload a gun or the look of the gun (it looks like something the military would use), etc. But none of these deal with the real problems.

We have plenty of laws on the books now and these are simply not enforced. We don't need any more laws. We need 'smart' laws that don't punish citizens exercising their rights because of the actions of a few.

Bear this is mind, our founding fathers have been right regarding the armed citizenry from the gitgo! Here is an example (for those libtards who actually can read and comprehend):

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." --Cesare Beccaria, On Crimes and Punishment, quoted by Thomas Jefferson in Commonplace Book

So Katrina, I'll ask the question. What needs to be done to protect the children in your charge? What is the best outcome and action to protect your charges.Yes I believe teachers that will not look at all avenues are unreliable in that they would think the police will be johnny on the spot when this massacre happens again, and it will happen again Katrina. I await your ideas for the fix. Please remember we are a republic and we are a free people and we have inalienable rights that cannot be removed, rights from God.

Plenty of our good military home without jobs. I got an idea, take everyone of those Rambo's, hire them, pay them a good salary because they are worth every cent, arm them, and just let one big insane idiot make one big insane mistake.

I love your idea. Our military men/women are highly skilled. We can use them right here at home. A new industry can be created. Instead of paying premium for school administrators. Use that money to staff highly skilled and armed ex-military.

A Virginia man was arrested Wednesday after police say he brought a 2-by-4-foot board with the words 'High Powered Rifle' written on its side into Sandy Hook Elementary School in the town of Strasburg, MyFoxDC.com reported.

Christopher Johnson, 33, was apparently trying to bring attention to how easy it is to bring a weapon into a school, Scott Proctor, a major at the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s office, said. Johnson was reportedly detained by a school resource officer before he was taken into police custody.

They never learn, schools are death traps without armed protection.

That's funny. The entire history behind why we even have a 2nd amendment, is because the Catholics wanted to keep taking the guns away from the Protestants.

Which leads to the next Adolph Hitler quote:
"As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice."

So, lets all keep an eye out and make sure this doesn't ever happen again, ok? Christian Fundamenltalism; taking away guns from everyone but themselves, outlawing abortion, endorsing corporal punishment, and depriving homosexuals rights to life and liberty.
All in the name of 'christ'.

Sound familiar?

Tim we have a society that needs to maintain its moral compass. Sound familiar?
Abortion is murder ---plain and simple. Would Christ allow abortions because a woman cant keep her legs closed? or for a child from a rape? What say you?

You do not even begin to understand the history of the 2nd amendment, by your comments.
As far as homosexuals they have life and liberty. BUT they are an abomination in the sight of God and the holy scriptures, most people with a moral compass would agree. Adam and Eve............. not Adam and Steve.

We as a society are loosing our ability to understand and take the moral high ground. JMO
