Business Comings & Goings: OfficeMax to Close

A look at new businesses coming into town and a fond farewell to those that have, for whatever reason, called it quits — and other business developments.

Days are numbered for Romeoville’s store on Weber Road.

The franchise is one of the casualties of the retailer’s plan to close 35 stores nationwide, along with one to two stores in Mexico.

Reps from the company’s Naperville corporate headquarters did not immediately respond to a request for more information from Patch on Tuesday, but an employee at the Romeoville location said the store will close by March 31. A sign was also posted on the door at the Weber Road store, notifying shoppers of the impending closing.

As the store prepares to close, shoppers can snag closeout bargains. Much of the location’s inventory has been marked down, with prices slashed 40 to 50 percent.

Despite the closures, OfficeMax last month announced it will open at least one new U.S. store in 2012, along with as many as nine new locations in Mexico.

OfficeMax is not the only Romeoville chain store to become a victim of corporate closures recently. The village's store was part of a nationwide downsizing for the company, which has struggled to compete with Netflix and online video rental services.

Nearby OfficeMax locations remain open, including a store at The Landings shopping center at 153 N. Weber Rd. in Bolingbrook and the location at the Joliet Commons Shopping Center, 2805 W. Plainfield Rd. in Joliet.
