A homeowner on a neighboring side street near McKool reported hearing unusual noises early Sunday, but did not realize it was gunfire.

“I didn’t even know,” she said. “It was just a strange noise that you wouldn’t normally hear.” The noise alarmed the homeowner enough that she and her husband checked outside to see what it could have been.

“We didn’t see anything, so we went to bed,” she said, adding it was “scary” to know a shooting occurred in the neighborhood.

According to the release, an investigation into the shooting indicates that it may have been gang related.

Assistant Police Chief Steven Lucchesi said the offenders were believed to have initially been on foot, but may have fled the scene of the shooting in a vehicle, although he could not give a description of the car.

"There are leads that we're following up on," Lucchesi said, declining to comment on how many shooters may have been involved. "That's part of the investigation. ... There's very little we can release at this time." An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, he said.

Lucchesi said police are asking anyone who may have information on the shooting to contact the Romeoville Police Department at 815-886-7219.
